8TH & HENNEPIN BUILDING

Office/Retail | Historic Renovation | 26,000 SF | Minneapolis, MN

Welsh Construction worked with Shea Architects to renovate the infamous Shinder’s building on Hennepin Avenue. The project, which began demolition in early 2012, emerged in November 2012 as a complete transformation with a vibrant new corner restaurant entrance, and a first-of-its-kind retractable rooftop.

Welsh renovated the entire building to bring it back to shell condition and add a retractable rooftop for Union Restaurant. Designing, engineering, fabricating and installing a customized fully enclosed, all glass retractable roof was a herculean effort for the entire development team. The retractable roof design required new structural infrastructure to be modified all the way through the building down to the footings under the basement slab and required significant structural steel modifications at the roof to support the load and functionality of the rooftop system.

The immediate response to the project was an amazing amount of positive media coverage, and new customers being introduced to this prominent, and now safe and vibrant corner of Minneapolis.
